We had more than ten years of experience in tutoring and teaching our daughter with an autism spectrum disorder. Below are some of the educational use that we thought were more successful in their development and learning. These methods can be used with any child with or without an autism spectrum disorder, pervasive developmental disorder or special needs.
Teaching aid 1-creating a therapy room
At the beginning, what got us going was the son RISE. Liz was the United States to the Institute and made a two-week courses on how to deal with a child with autism, methods for working with and mentoring a child with autism and how to configure a room of therapy for a mentoring a child with autism and/or special needs.
The course is, in General, not only for parents of children with autism, but also for children with learning difficulties, generalized development disorder (PDD) and children with special needs. The course focusses too much on dealing with an emotional level with the fact that your son has an intellectual disability, and ongoing support, if desired.
So on the arrival of Liz back home that we have assembled a therapy room. We have used a spare room and painted in vivid colors. We can configure with shelves and drawers to store, play equipment, a computer and printer, table height of the child a suitable and chairs to work on top of the table and a resistant coatings. The basic idea was to have a room that the child can identify with as an area of learning and fun only, somewhere they in time know that when they are there is time to learn.
2-get help teaching by means of a child with autism
One of the things very useful that Liz learned with son RISE was a method for working with autistic children, a way to get to them and that was to arrive at their level. Get down on the floor and rock with them, as they do spin objects, repeat the sounds they make, enter their world. This is how we have Isy accusing us, doing exactly that! She began to pay attention when we enter into his world and we slowly began to influence their behaviour and satisfy their thirst for learning.
Most children with or without autism spectrum disorders, Pervasive developmental disorders, learning difficulties or disabilities enjoy learning, they have a thirst for knowledge, is just a matter of finding how to reach them and make learning fun for them and for yourself.
Teaching aid 3-applied behavioral analysis and discrete trial teaching
The next step for us was getting in applied behavior analysis (ABA) and discrete trial teaching (DTT). Liz also sought out and trained therapists, including student Uni work intensely with Isy and its progress was amazing. Isy loved in his learning therapy room. Each session would run for 2 hours, and she would earn up to three sessions per day up to six days per week.
In a relatively short time, Isy began to learn to count, spell out her name, read books, ask things, say Yes and no, imaginative play, identify the genres, moods, numerous items and much more. In a nutshell, she began to communicate and be aware of your surroundings, we were over the Moon! This thing really works.
Teaching aid 4-Custom made and IT Computer based teaching Aids
After a while Liz was amassing a range of autism spectrum disorder related educational materials, which could also be used with children with special needs, resources such as-letters with pictures, shapes, puzzles, color cards, cards for sizes, illustrated books, cards, etc. I also started doing a little it or training aids as interactive Flash cards with sound and a TOILET training program customized computer-based interactive. This time, I was working in Antarctica and I would send Isy via internet interactive stories of their favorite characters (Snowy and Humphrey) in Antarctica, this really was a long way in teaching him to read, she would thrash the stories!
Teaching aid 5-things kids love making
Another teaching great help that I used to teach language Isy was your springboard. She used to love to jump on the trampoline and even more so when I joined it, we would play silly games that required her to tell or say short sentences. I would like to point to the sky and take it to mean short phrases like "touch the clouds in the sky" or "turn" and "my turn" purposely would lie on the springboard until she would ask "getting up father" and "lets skip the father". Use a favorite activity for teaching children is a very powerful teaching helps
The first few days on springboard where Isy was beginning to learn to speak and we jump laugh and sometimes just sit and look at the birds of heaven were without doubt some of the best and most memorable days of my life.
These are some of the autism spectrum disorder educational materials we've seen that really worked for us and our daughter Isy. There are other factors involved in its course, as well as supplements, biomedical, physical activities such as swimming and horseback riding, music and sound therapy and what we believe to be a safe home environment safe and fun for all of us.
