What is it?
Autism refers to a collection of Pervasive developmental Disorders (PDD). Typically, this occurs in the first three years of life that affect interaction and communication capabilities of a person. He is often referred to as a spectrum disorder because it expresses different and in different degrees of different individuals.
According to a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which was issued in 2009, this disorder became more prevalent. At the time when the report was released, 1 in every 110 children was autistic. It is estimated that 1.5 million people in the United States suffers from autism and increases at an average rate of 10-17 percent annually. The reason for this increase is yet to be established. However, there was speculation that improved diagnosis and environmental influences are the reasons for the increase.
The Autism Society estimated that the cost of caring for an autistic child life varies from $ 3.5 million to $ 5 million. In the United States, about $ 90 billion is spent annually in costs for autism spectrum disorders (ASD). This figure covers research, insurance costs, exemptions of medical aid, transportation, housing and employment among other costs. Although it is treatable, early identification and Diagnostics play a significant role in your treatment. Unfortunately, most parents mistakenly expect their children to overcome developmental disorders.
Symptoms of autism
ASD has certain characteristic behaviors that are not very obvious in childhood (18-24 months) but become apparent in early childhood (24 months to 6 years). When you take your baby for well-baby clinic, the doctor must perform a screening development and ask questions about your child's progress. According to the National Institute of child health and human development (NICHD), there are five behaviors which warrant further investigation:
No babble or coo for 12 months
No gesture (point, wave, grasp) for 12 months
say single words by 16 months
say two words phrases on your own for 24 months
Have any loss of any language or social skills at any age.
However, even if your child displays these five signs, that doesn't mean that they are autistic. This is because ASDs has different symptoms that should be further assessed by a multidisciplinary team. The team should include a neurologist, developmental pediatrician, psychologist, consultant, speech therapist and any other professional who has knowledge of the field of learning.
Causes of autism
Researchers are yet to establish their cause; most cases of ASD say be idiopathic. In fact, there are many possible causes Autism as there are symptoms of autism. In 1943, Dr. Leo Kanner, the first psychiatrist to describe the disorder has stated that it was caused by cold, unloving mothers. As expected, researchers have proved that it is not the result of poor parenting.
Scientific evidence shows that this disease is caused by a combination of factors, including genetic and environmental factors. The exposure time before, during or after birth plays a role in the development and presentation of the disorder. Researchers still are investigating several theories, including one that heredity, genetics and autism links. Most studies suggest that there is a genetic basis for autism spectrum disorders. But it seems that some children are born susceptible to those diseases, researchers were not able to identify the triggers that cause the disorder develop.
Genetic vulnerability
There are certain medical conditions that make a person more susceptible to disorders of autism. These conditions include tuberous sclerosis, fragile x syndrome, congenital rubella syndrome and not treated PKU (phenylketonuria). Also found a link between development disorders and the ingestion of harmful substances during pregnancy.
Environmental factors
In addition, there are other factors that contribute greatly to the increase in autism prevalence. These factors include environmental toxins such as heavy metals which have become more common in the environment than they were in the past. People who suffer from autism spectrum disorders do not have the ability to detoxify environmental toxins.
