Autism is a brain disorder that affects the three major areas of human development: speech, communication and social interaction. It is a spectrum disorder, meaning that two people with autism may have very different symptoms or characteristics.

There is no medical test for autism. A diagnosis of autism is made by a team of professionals through observation and analysis of the child. Typically, this can be diagnosed when a child is 2-3 years of age.
To date, no single cause or cure was identified while there is extensive research on the subject.
However, autism is definitely not a result of poor parents or children be disobedient. Some research seems to suggest that it is caused by genetic and environmental factors such as vaccines or environmental toxins.
Adaptability and intelligence tests shows that most children with autism have some level of mental retardation. However, some people with autism have average and above average intelligence. Some even have higher Iq.
In conventional medicine, autism is considered a neurological disease that has no cure. However, there have been a number of theories, research and evidence that early intervention is extremely important for the development of the child and many behaviors can be changed in a positive way.
Today, with extensive research on this subject, different educational strategies and approaches were developed and proven to deliver positive results. Studies show that highly structured, specialized education program under measured for the individual needs of the child has positive results. However, there is no single teaching method for autism.
Other treatment may help include medicine, diet, vitamins, occupational therapy and sensory. It is reported that some parents think their children's symptoms and behaviors have improved by following biomedical approaches such as gluten-free diet and casein and with the addition of nutritional supplements.
