Comic strip agenda to teach autistic children and soothe

Agenda and day strips are a great way to get an autistic child to understand what is happening on a daily basis. He teaches language and can modify their behaviour, understanding what is happening.

We find with our daughters and other autistic children that one of the main causes of a collapse is when they are confused about what is happening. This is often happens when a routine is changed and they don't know about it, or understand why.

Communicating with autistic children, by some means, in advance, perhaps a day earlier, than wait for the day are exceptionally calm even if it is a big change in your routine.

One way that we find child communication is through pictures. Autistic children are highly visual communicators. They see the world in pictures, mainly because they cannot process sounds and written words.

Compics, PECS and Boardmaker were developed to communicate with people who have harmed or not have language skills. They can be used to communicate and, finally, for teaching language step-by-step.

The day agenda strips are just an example of using pictures to communicate, but that for us was a huge step to teach and communicate our daughter about what to expect over the next few days, and any changes to their routines.

With this knowledge it was as if she was a child completely different, voluntarily, after what was on the agenda, and experiences to accept new and challenging. However if the programming had to change, then there was a problem.

Over time however we changed things would use the same method, only without much notice, but was so effective in preparing it for change.

How do the strips of day agenda
The Strip can be composed of laminated cardboard or plastic with a Velcro strip along the front. The images used for the track consist of, Compic style images PECS or Boardmaker with a Velcro pad joined them on the back. The track is made long enough to fit enough pictures to the events of days.

It is important to make the strips and images large enough to draw the attention of the child and make it easier for them to see and read. Images must have words with them even if they can't read as this will help to teach them the words associated with the images.

How to use the Strip day agenda
For each day a schedule can be arranged in order of events from left to right. The child can see what day it is, for example f Friday and what will do during the day can be slowly progressed in time as the child learns to read or recognize the words on cards with words or short phrases only, to describe the events of days.

Now we have progressed is Isy use a journal that she refers regularly during the day to see what schedule their days. It's great to see her looking and reading her diary and know exactly what's in store for it for that day and the next day, such as events planned in the future.

It is important to know when progress pictures to words, phrases and not done too early or too late. If well done they will be easily and seamlessly transition time.
