It is hoped by many parents of autistic children that, once the causes of autism are discovered, this condition is curable and maybe even prevented. Unfortunately medical research has been unable to isolate the primary cause of autism among children. Maybe in the future the autistic disorder is associated with a specific genetic abnormality or a group of interrelated factors within the genetic makeup of a child.
As things stand today, disorder of autism cannot be prevented nor is there a cure. Given this reality, the best we can do as a society is to support children and adults with autism and be willing to do what we can to make them feel comfortable and accepted. An important starting point is to identify what is factual information and what are the myths about the causes of autism disorder.
Myth 1: poor parents causes autism in children. This is totally false. There is no valid research to support this claim about poor parenting skills leading to children develop autism disorder.
Myth 2: Autism is caused by poor eating habits. Once again, there is no medical evidence to show that the autistic disorder is caused by what you eat. Some autistic children have food allergies or benefit of vitamin supplements, however these are conditions which may be marked for this disorder and is certainly not the cause according to current research and theory.
Myth 3: vaccination causes autism. Currently there is ongoing research into these allegations, however, without concrete evidence to show a clear link between vaccines and Autism, is still much safer to protect their children against disease and illness with a vaccine that is to put them at risk by not having vaccines due to fears that could lead to autism.
Exposing the myths surround autism above raises the question "what is the cause of autism in children and adults"? Here are some facts about autism disorder:
Current research and theory around autism focuses on strong links between disorder of autism and how the brain works. For example, there is no evidence to support the fact that autistic people have larger brains and their brains appear to be "hard wired" differently than a normal brain. Without going into specific details, for the purposes of this article, suffice it to say that these brain differences exist in many areas of the brain and therefore can be seen in simplistic terms, as a global brain malfunction is bringing somehow on the disorder of autism in the individual.Another feature of many autistic children and adults are health problems caused by an immune deficiency. As with vaccines, this is another area of ongoing research. Cases of autism are often found to exist within the parental family tree more there were cases of parents, having more of an autistic child. Combined immunodeficiency problems with the occurrence of autism in genealogical trees have some people thinking that finding a cure for autism can be through genetic research.Without doubt, autistic disorder is a very complex problem that will require more research that we hope provide us with better alternatives of treatment in the future and maybe one day even a cure. However, parents and society in General, need to become better educated about autism disorder. The more you know about autism, the better we can assist and support individuals who are afflicted with this condition.
